SSI eligibility
To be eligible for SSI you must either be aged, meaning sixty-five years or older, blind, or disabled.
You must also have a limited income and limited resources. Limited income includes money earned from work, money received from other sources such as Social Security, worker's compensation, unemployment benefits, friends or relatives, ect., and free food or shelter. Limited resources are assets and things that you own like bank accounts, land, vehicles, personal property, life insurance, ect. The SSI monetary limit for an individual to qualify for benefits is $2000 and the limit for a couple is $3000.
In addition, to qualify for benefits under SSI you must be a U.S. citizen or in a qualified alien category and a resident of one of the fifty states, including the District of Columbia and the Northern Mariana Islands. You cannot be absent from the country for more than thirty consecutive days, and you have to agree to apply for any other cash benefits you may be entitled to along with certain other requirements. |
