Asthma
Asthma is one of the most common obstructive breathing disorders for both adults and children. The condition is characterized by abnormal contractions of the bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes tend to become inflamed and narrow allowing less air to enter the lungs. Asthmas can generally be treated with prescription drugs, however when it cannot be treated it may rise to the level of a disability according to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:
- Chronic asthmatic bronchitis satisfying the criteria of chronic obstructive lung disease; OR
- Attacks of asthma requiring physician intervention, not controllable with prescribed treatment, and occurring at least once every 2 months or at least 6 times a year.
