Breathing disorders all have some form of shortness of breath. In order to qualify for disability benefits you will have to provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) with documentation including shortness of breath and laboratory test results displaying severe wheezing, coughing etc. Breathing disorders generally fall into one of two categories, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and restrictive pulmonary disease. The first category generally is caused and or worsened significantly by cigarette smoke. The second category is a decreased amount in usable lung volume.
