Chronic Pulmonary Insufficiency

This is a generic term that covers many types of breathing disorders. Different sections under this regulation require different tests. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will determine which tests are necessary. In regard to children, bronchopulmonary dysplasia is the most common breathing disorder. In order to qualify there must be detailed records of the child’s medical history.

For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to any cause. The SSA will evaluate the severity of the obstruction; OR
• Chronic restrictive ventilatory disease due to any cause. The SSA will evaluate the severity of the restrictive breathing disorder; OR
• Chronic impairment of gas exchange due to clinically documented pulmonary disease. The SSA will evaluate the severity of the restrictive breathing and some cases of emphysema.
