Chronic Thrombocytopenia

A severe drop in platelet count that can result in repeated episodes of serious, life threatening bleeding. Children can experience a disease substantially similar to this; however they can normally be treated with steroid drugs.

For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:

  • At least one episode of spontaneous bleeding within 5 months of the date of disability determination requiring a transfusion; OR
  • Intracranial bleeding within 12 months before the date of disability determination.
