Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency is a disease caused by weak, worn, or damaged valves in the veins of the legs. It causes swelling (edema) of the legs. It can also cause sores on the legs, especially in the area of the ankles. In order to qualify the claimant must have this disease in the lower extremity with some obstruction of the deep venous system.
For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:
- Extensive brawny edema - most of the leg and foot; OR
- Superficial varicosities, stasis dermatitis and recurrent or persistent ulceration which has not healed following at least 3 months of prescribed medical or surgical therapy.
