Cystic Fibrosis

This disease is usually genetic which results in a build up of secretions and mucus in the lungs. Even though you may not have all the necessary symptoms, the Social Security Administration (SSA) tends to award benefits to claimants with cystic fibrosis because of its severity and high mortality rate. For all purposes children with cystic fibrosis are treated the same as adults according to the Social Security Administration (SSA) .

For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:

1. Episodes of bronchitis, pneumonia, hemoptysis or respiratory failure requiring physician intervention, occurring at least once every 2 months or at least 6 times a year; OR
2. Persistent pulmonary infection accompanied by additional recurrent, symptomatic episodes of bacterial infection occurring at least once every 6 months and requiring intravenous antibiotics or an inhaler; OR
3. An EFV1 value (measured by spirometry) satisfying one of the numbers listed below:
