As the population the United States continues to get older, more and more people are becoming disabled and seeking Social Security Disability Benefits or SSDI. Though a related topic is SSI, we will focus this blog on SSDI and the implications of an increased number of Americans seeking and receiving money from the government. There are many ways to Speed up your Disability Claim.
The Social Security Administration does an excellent job of making sure that only those that truly desire to get disability benefits actually get them. But, and this is a big but, that level of accuracy causes many people to wait years and years to finally get their SSDI checks started. Now to be fair, the SSA does give back benefits (and these checks can be very, very large). During this time, those seeking benefits have very, very little or no income. This is a real problem. Most turn to friends, family and non-profits for help.
Another problem with the current system is the wait time to have cases heard and decisions made. In some areas the wait can be more that 2 years. This is time that the disabled individual must find a way to live without much or any income. Also, this increases the cost to the system. The attorney handling the case must keep the case open the entire time, update records, stay in contact with the client and all the while not receive any fees. The doctors’ offices must continue to provide records to the attorneys office and/or Social Security disability office. This also has the affect of increasing healthcare costs for everyone.
Though there is no easy solution to the Social Security disability problems or the larger Social Security problem, improving the efficiency of the system and reducing the amount of paperwork required, the number of people that have to ‘touch’ the file and the time need to complete the SSDI and SSI process would help many thousands of people at need our help the most.
