Consultative examiners are independent, non-government employees who are hired to evaluate a Social Security Disability claimant to determine the severity of their mental or physical medical health condition. Consultative examinations are requested by the Disability Determination Services Office if a disability examiner does not have enough information to make a determination of whether or not a claimant is disabled and qualifies to receive either Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance. Consultative examiners will review a claimant's medical records and perform a cursory examination of the claimant. Disability reports must be submitted by the Consultative Examiner to the Disability Determination Services office within a specified time period.
