Definition of Freedom of Information Act
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was signed into law on September 6, 1966, by President Lyndon Johnson. The public now has the right to examine records (with certain exceptions) which have not previously been disclosed to the public or were controlled by the United States Federal Government. The act requires Federal agencies to allow a claimant access to their medical files and records.
