Definition of Peptic Ulcer Disease

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) refers to a discrete mucosal defect in the portions of the gastrointestinal tract (gastric or duodenal) exposed to acid and pepsin secretion. In order to qualify the claimant must have documented information including x-rays or some other form of imaging technique.

For this condition to be severe enough to meet the Social Security Administration's listing the claimant must have:

  • Recurrent ulceration after surgery despite therapy; OR
  • Inoperable fistula; OR
  • Recurrent obstruction of the intestine demonstrated on x-rays; OR
  • Significant weight loss.
