Terminal Illness (teri) Cases

The Social Security Administration expedites cases they consider terminal. Terminal cases can include those which the SSA determines are untreatable, the symptoms cannot be reversed and the claimant is expected to die. The SSA process to expedite the disability determination process includes special handling, labeling and flagging of TERI claims to help the claimant receive either SSI or SSDI benefits as soon as possible.

There are a variety of conditions which can be considered TERI cases including Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Lou Gehrig's Disease, and certain types of cancers. Claimants receiving home hospice care, who are dependent on life-sustaining support or who have been comatose for more than 30 days may also be considered terminally ill.
